ISEM is a geographically-distributed organization for promoting mathematics teaching in ways that encourage human development.

The Institute was founded in 1980. It gained early international visibility by sponsoring the Perry Network in the 1980s. Most recently, it has helped support work on the MATtours project to develop electronic inquiry-based tours of mathematical ideas. Now we have extended our umbrella to include IndieLearn projects, which are consistent with our mission.

As a 501(c)(3) organization, the Institute primarily serves as a conduit for grants supporting its purposes. Over the years it has won grant support from organizations such as Harvard University, the Fund for Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE), and SciMath Minnesota and has served as a sub-contractor under other grants.
